Accessibility at Bridge Cottage and Nutley Windmill
We want everyone to be able to enjoy Bridge Cottage Heritage Centre and Nutley Windmill. Both are historic sites with genuine physical constraints, so please read the details below before you visit — and do get in touch if you'd like to talk through your visit in advance.
Bridge Cottage Heritage Centre
High Street, Uckfield, East Sussex, TN22 1AZ
Personal Assistant Tickets and event accessibility
We aim to make our events as accessible as possible within the constraints of our listed building. We provide hearing loops and an accessible toilet. Concerts and talks take place on the first floor, accessed via stairs. However, on request we can livestream the performance to a ground-floor viewing area.
We offer free Personal Assistant tickets for disabled visitors.
IMPORTANT: Ground-floor livestream viewing must be arranged with at least two weeks' notice before the event. Please note that, due to technical limitations, we can't always guarantee this will be possible but we will try to accommodate wherever we can.
Please contact us before your visit to make arrangements: 01825 760734.
Building access
Bridge Cottage is a Grade II listed, 15th-century Wealden hall house. The ground floor is fully accessible. Due to the age and construction of the building, the first floor (Upper Chamber and Hazel Room) can only be reached by stairs, unfortunately there is no lift or step-free alternative. Most exhibitions are held on the ground floor, and we ensure there is plenty downstairs so nobody misses out. There is also a baby changing area in the disabled toilets.
Parking
Free short-term parking is available at Bell Walk, directly behind Bridge Cottage. Free longer-term parking can be found in Uckfield's main town car park, Luxford, nearby
Getting here by public transport
Bridge Cottage is on the High Street, directly opposite Uckfield railway station and a short walk from the bus station.
Opening times
Bridge Cottage does not keep regular public opening hours. Please call or email ahead to book a visit or tour — we can't always guarantee access on a drop-in basis due to private hire events.
Nutley Windmill
Crowborough Road, Nutley, East Sussex, TN22 3HY
Site access
The Windmill stands in an open field on Ashdown Forest. The ground is rough, uneven grass rather than a firm, level surface, which may be difficult for wheelchair or mobility scooter users.
Building access
The mill itself is only accessible via a steep external staircase, there is no step-free route inside. However, security cameras livestream footage from inside the Windmill to a screen in the shop, so you're still able to see inside if you're unable to climb the stairs.
Parking
A small number of disabled parking spaces are available on-site. General visitor parking is at Friends Clump, around 400m from the Windmill (a small charge applies, managed by Ashdown Forest).
Opening times
The Windmill typically opens on selected Sundays throughout the year, and for maintenance on most Wednesdays during open season, 11am–3pm (or dusk), subject to volunteer availability. Please check our Events page for current dates.
