About the event

It's only when you know how to look that you realise many of our medieval churches are covered with centuries old graffiti. Despite what you might think, most of these marks, incised into the very fabric of the building, are not vandalism. They range from rough, apparently random, scratches to beautifully detailed mythical creatures.

For the past 12 years, Sue has worked with other volunteers to survey and record churches in an effort to learn more about the form and function of the marks. In this talk, Sue will show us images of some of the most interesting examples, consider why medieval worshippers may have been inspired to make them and explain how you can find the marks for yourselves.
